Supporting Nurses on Governing Boards
Nurses can use their wisdom and insight to enhance effective decision-making when given the opportunity to serve on health governing boards. Nurses and midwives are at the frontline of health service delivery and offer a wealth of expertise and insight into communities and the health sector. Their inclusion on governing boards has the potential to promote patient-centred health systems in East Africa.
In March 2025, HGI and Strathmore Business School, in collaboration with the Kenya Nursing Council and Nursing on Boards Coalition, facilitated a roundtable discussion around placing nurses on governing boards in East Africa. The roundtable convened leaders from key health institutions in Kenya to discuss how best to increase the number of confident, competent nurses on health boards in East Africa. The workshop was facilitated by Jim Rice, HGI Vice-President and Kim Harper, Former Executive Director of the NOBC.
